How to turn resume tasks into a freelance service

Start with work you can demonstrate. Name the buyer's problem, define a deliverable you control, and put a boundary around it. A stronger service description should make your experience clearer, not make it bigger.

1. Separate the task from the job title

A title such as operations coordinator tells a buyer little about what they can purchase. Write down the actual work: which records you maintained, which handoffs you documented and which reports you prepared. Keep tools, ownership and frequency specific.

Fictional starting point: I maintain HubSpot records, document the handoff from sales to onboarding, and prepare a weekly pipeline report in Google Sheets.

2. Connect one task to one buyer problem

Choose a problem that your existing work equips you to investigate. In this example, missing handoff information is a plausible problem to ask a small software team about. It is not a verified diagnosis of every software business.

Buyer hypothesis: a small B2B software team has no consistent checklist for moving a signed customer from sales to onboarding.

3. Describe what the buyer receives

Replace vague transformation language with an inspectable asset. A checklist, field inventory or reporting template can be reviewed and accepted. Avoid promising revenue growth or a time saving you have not measured.

Draft service: I review a sample of your sales-to-onboarding handoffs and document the required fields, owner and next action in a checklist your team can use.

4. Bound the first engagement

Agree how many records or handoffs you will inspect, which team members you need to speak to and how revisions work. Separate data cleanup from systems development. Using a CRM does not establish expertise in designing databases.

Proposed pilot: review 20 anonymized handoffs, hold one 30-minute working session, deliver one checklist and one reporting template, with one revision. Custom integrations and ongoing CRM administration are excluded.

5. Choose honest proof

Show an anonymized sample you have permission to share, or create a clearly labelled demonstration. If no outcome was measured, explain what you produced and how it was used. Do not add invented percentages, client logos or testimonials.

Before you use it

  • Can I personally deliver every item?
  • Does the buyer know what they receive?
  • Are access, volume and revision limits explicit?
  • Is each claim supported by a real example?
  • Have I tested the buyer problem in an actual conversation?
